Year 7 | Year 8 | Year 9 | KS4 French | KS4 Spanish

LANGUAGES KS4 - FRENCH & SPANISH

Course description:

Although it is no longer compulsory to study a modern foreign language at KS4 it is well acknowledged that more than ever nowadays, we need languages as technology makes instantaneous communication an everyday occurrence.

Also important to the study of modern foreign languages is that it brings awareness of other societies, cultures and civilisation which are essential parts of being a global citizen and enrich our lives.

Language skills open up opportunities for travelling and working in other countries as well as greatly enhancing job prospects. It has been reported that 20% of British businesses are losing vital contracts abroad because their staff cannot cope with the language and/or cultural barriers.

In Key Stage 4 you will have the following options.

a) To continue with French to GCSE (5 periods per fortnight), building on the solid foundations you already have. The French GCSE is suitable to pupils of all abilities.

b) To switch from French to a two-year intensive course in Spanish to GCSE (5 periods per fortnight). This course is suitable for those who are rapid and motivated foreign language learners.

c) To study both French and Spanish to GCSE (10 periods per fortnight).

In French and Spanish the format of the GCSE examination is the same. There are tests in Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing, each of which carries 25% of the marks. For each test you can enter at Higher or Foundation level. These tests are taken in the Summer Term of Year 11. There is no coursework.

In both languages, the topics covered over the two years will be :

  • Self and Family
  • Leisure
  • Health
  • Holidays
  • House
  • Where I Live
  • Food and Drink
  • Education
  • Environment

The homework requirement for GCSE is two homeworks per week, each of one hour.

Your French and/or Spanish teachers will be happy to advise you on which of these courses is most suitable for you.
