Unit 1. Short story – comparative work
Pupils will read a range of short stories, focusing upon the writer’s craft.
Assessment Task: Writing a story of your own

Unit 2. Drama: Shakespeare on film
Pupils will study a Shakespeare play chosen by their teacher, exploring the plot, characters and themes via text and film.
Assessment Task: Reading comprehension

Unit 3. War poetry and the Language of Warfare
Pupils will read a range of poetry, focusing upon reading between the lines, language and imagery.
Assessment Task: Analyse and explore two poems about war.

Unit 4. Speaking and Listening
Pupils will debate topical issues, expressing ideas and opinions in a group.
Assessment Task: Participation in Group and Individual Speaking and Listening activities.

Unit 5. Novel
Pupils will read a novel chosen by their teacher. There will be a range of tasks focusing on craft of the writer and reading for meaning.
Assessment Task: Selection of transactional writing (Letters, Leaflets, Articles, Reports, Reviews)

Unit 6. Setting Up a Company
Pupils will identify and set up a new product by exploring a range of writing and speaking for different purposes.
Assessment Task: Group planning and creating a video presentation and write a report.

Unit 7. Reality TV
Pupils will explore how reality TV is presented in the media, concentrating on the response of the audience, and decisions of editors and writers.
Assessment Tasks: Reading – comparison of two texts. Writing – writing an effective argument.

Unit 8. GCSE Literature Text 1 – initial read
Pupils will read a copy of the novel they are to study for GCSE Literature, beginning to explore how plot, character and theme are presented.

Unit 9 .GCSE coursework
Pupils will produce English Language coursework for Year 10 and try some of the GCSE examination papers.
Assessment Tasks: Write a transactional piece of writing for your Year 10 GCSE coursework folder and a variety of speaking and listening assessment.

On-going throughout the course of the year:
- Independent reading pupils will read a range of fiction and non-fiction texts of their own choice. Titles of completed books are recorded in English books and different tasks completed

Examination:
• Formal examination takes place at the end of the year, to assess reading and writing.
